The UAE's Cybersecurity Council has warned that if not adequately secured, nearly three-quarters of the nation's smart home appliances are susceptible to hackers. Hackers are increasingly targeting connected devices like voice assistants, security systems, and automatic lighting and cooling units, especially when users rely on default settings or disregard fundamental security precautions.
Sharing a home's primary Wi-Fi password with guests or leaving voice assistants online all the time are dangerous habits. Both have the ability to open doors for hackers to remotely control devices or steal data.
Numerous homes now have baby monitors, which were identified as particularly vulnerable since they may allow attackers to record conversations, follow movements within the house, or even speak directly to youngsters.
In order to mitigate threats, the council recommended three essential measures: create strong, one-of-a-kind passwords; update device software frequently; and control all smart devices from a single hub to restrict access points.
Additionally, it recommended that homes turn off voice assistants when not in use, turn on privacy settings, and refrain from connecting extraneous gadgets to the internet. It was also advised to set up a distinct Wi-Fi network for smart gadgets, keeping them apart from the main house network. Instead of overloading houses with internet-connected devices that increase the attack surface, families were urged to purchase only the things they actually need.
The council just started a week-long awareness campaign as part of its ongoing Cyber Pulse effort, including advice on software upgrades, device security procedures, and the significance of remaining alert as cyber threats change in a home that is becoming more and more digitalized.
