The UAE Dirham symbol is set to become a standard feature on keyboards after the Unicode Consortium officially approved it in its latest major update.
The new symbol was first introduced by the Central Bank of the UAE in March 2025 and is expected to appear above the number 6 key, replacing the existing ^ symbol.
Until now, the dirham has commonly been abbreviated as AED, Dhs or Dh, with no single standard symbol in everyday use. The new Unicode-approved symbol will provide a unified way to represent the currency.
The symbol is already appearing in some online stores and is expected to become more widely used on ATMs, price tags, banknotes, coins and calculators as keyboard and software support expands.
