As the UAE Media Council reiterated on Thursday, it is illegal to use generative artificial intelligence or comparable technologies to portray public persons or national symbols without permission.
According to the Council, using AI technologies to disseminate false information, encourage hate speech, defame people, damage their reputation and dignity, or undermine societal values and principles is a media violation that is punishable by fines and administrative sanctions under the Media Violations Regulation clause.
In addition to upholding professional and ethical responsibility, it urged all social media users, media organizations, and content producers to adhere strictly to established rules and regulations.
Strict media laws are upheld in the UAE to prevent the dissemination of false information and cyberbullying while promoting unity and harmony in accordance with the nation's tolerance policy. Among other things, all media must protect the state's emblems, cultural heritage, and national identity, according to Article 1(17) of the Federal Decree Concerning Media Regulation. A similar statement emphasizes the significance of using AI ethically in the official UAE Charter for Responsible and Ethical Use of AI, which was released in June 2024.
