Abu Dhabi supermarkets have begun removing unhealthy snacks and sugary drinks from checkout counters and other high-traffic areas under the Healthy Living programme.
Checkout counters, store entrances and aisle ends are key "temptation zones". Residents say removing unhealthy snacks from these areas will reduce unplanned purchases, especially among children, while encouraging healthier shopping habits.
The initiative is also supported by Nutri-Mark labels, which rate packaged foods from A to E based on nutritional value, helping shoppers make healthier choices. Residents say the labels have encouraged them to choose products with less sugar and unhealthy fats.
The TAMM app helps consumers assess products that do not yet carry Nutri-Mark labels.
The initiative is part of Abu Dhabi's broader healthy living strategy, which also includes restrictions on fast-food advertising and stricter school meal standards.
