According to a top official, self-driving pods may start transporting commuters through the congested streets of Abu Dhabi before the end of this year. The next-generation autonomous system, Urbanloop, will make daily travel safer and more efficient, according to Sebastian Mangeant, CEO of Abu Dhabi Transport Company (ADT).
A maximum of eight passengers, four seated and four standing, can fit in the show pod. A data sheet seen by Khaleej Times states that there are also smaller and larger pods available, with capacities ranging from two to ten passengers. It is also accessible by wheelchair and bicycle.
The driverless technology, which is adapted to the heat and dust of the area, is reportedly presently undergoing trial on Reem Island in Abu Dhabi. According to an ADT spokesperson, the pod is being tested in the UAE at about 20 kmph, but in France, the mechanism allows it to reach 50 kmph. By enabling it to avoid stations and get at its destination without stopping along the way, the novel technology is intended to relieve traffic in cities.
Given its advantages, the Urbanloop and other self-driving cars may prove to be a very effective means of providing Etihad Rail customers with first- and last-mile options.
