Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a new digital service allowing electric scooter users to apply for riding permits عبر its online platforms, including the RTA Dubai and Dubai Now apps.
The initiative aims to regulate micro-mobility and improve safety by discouraging reckless riding and ensuring scooters and e-bikes are used only on approved tracks. The move follows a rise in related accidents, with police reporting 13 deaths between January and May 2025 linked to jaywalking and scooter use.
While e-scooters and e-bikes are popular for their convenience and eco-friendly benefits, growing safety concerns have sparked debate, with some calling for stricter rules and others urging better regulation rather than bans.
