Residents across the UAE are set to ring in 2026 with a combination of public holidays, remote work arrangements and extended breaks, giving many a smooth and relaxed start to the year.
Private sector employees will enjoy a paid public holiday on Thursday, January 1, 2026, following confirmation by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE). The decision is in line with a Cabinet circular approving official holidays for both public and private sectors. Although New Year’s Day is among the holidays that may be shifted to create a longer weekend, most residents will celebrate on January 1 itself and return to work on Friday, January 2.
Government employees across the country will also observe January 1 as a public holiday. In addition, Friday, January 2, 2026, has been designated a remote working day for federal government staff, allowing employees to balance professional duties with family time. Authorities have clarified, however, that employees whose roles require on-site attendance must report to work as usual.
Public sector employees in Sharjah will benefit from an even longer break. The emirate has announced January 1 as a public holiday for government entities, authorities and institutions. As Friday already forms part of Sharjah’s three-day weekend, official work will resume on Monday, January 5, resulting in a four-day long weekend.
Meanwhile, although Christmas is not an official public holiday in the UAE, many companies — especially international firms and those in finance, consulting and technology — offer additional year-end leave. Some employees receive anything from a single day to a full week off, reflecting evolving workplace practices and a growing emphasis on rest and well-being.
