The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled a new concept aimed at easing traffic congestion in the emirate: Glydways. The system features compact, autonomous electric pods that operate on narrow, dedicated tracks, allowing them to bypass regular traffic.
Showcased at the World Governments Summit this week, Glydways can transport more than 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction at speeds of up to 50km/h. Each pod can carry four to six passengers and has a range of up to 250km.
The project is planned for four locations across Dubai, with a proposed 2.8km route linking National Paints Metro Station and Bluewaters. It is also set to be introduced in Umm Suqeim, Al Quoz and Dubai Festival City.
Designed to operate using autonomous vehicles, dedicated guideways and AI, Glydways aims to offer a 24/7, on-demand and affordable transport option. The initiative is being showcased at the summit from February 3 to 5.
