Dubai has now placed smart pedestrian signals at ten more locations throughout the emirate, bringing the total to 27. This is the second stage of the Roads and Transport Authority's (RTA) project. These signals, which have been placed around the city, have shown excellent results in the project's initial phase. Intersections along Omar Bin Al Khattab Street, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street, Al Satwa Street, Salah Al Din Street, Amman Street, Al Qusais Street (near labor camps), and Oud Metha Street (in front of the school zone) are among the places covered in this phase.
The signals make use of state-of-the-art technologies to expedite car and pedestrian movement, improve traffic systems, and increase road safety. Intelligent thermal cameras are used to track pedestrian movement on sidewalks and during crossings. These cameras are always on, and they can detect movement even in dimly lit or dark environments. The technology optimizes timing control and increases signal efficiency by integrating with push-button devices to register real crossing requests.
Derq's technology is the first of its type in the area and makes use of behavior prediction models. When people are about to cross, the system can trigger traffic signal controllers, in-road warning lights, and flashing warning signs. It successfully avoids any possible collisions with oncoming cars.
