UAE Cybersecurity Council alerts public to critical WhatsApp zero-day attack

The UAE Cybersecurity Council has warned of a serious zero-day threat that lets hackers access smartphones through a single WhatsApp call from an unknown number—even if it’s not answered. Zero-day attacks exploit unseen flaws, and this one could expose users’ photos, chats, and account data with just one malicious call.

To stay safe, authorities urged users to follow six key precautions: block unfamiliar callers, avoid opening doubtful links, install reputable security apps, depend solely on official sources, keep WhatsApp regularly updated, and activate two-step verification.

The council also advised all users—especially those working in government and critical sectors—to frequently review their security settings, activate multi-factor authentication, and refrain from using personal devices for sensitive communications.

It warned that fake websites can appear legitimate while being designed to steal personal data, money, or identities. Staying informed is the first defence, and taking the right action is the second. Users can check whether a link is safe by visiting the UAE Cybersecurity Council’s official portal: staysafe.csc.gov.ae/home.
