The UAE has warned that collecting donations for unlicensed organisations could lead to imprisonment and fines of up to Dh500,000, as authorities step up action against fraudulent fundraising campaigns.
In guidance issued by the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, residents were urged to verify charities through official, government-approved platforms before donating. The public was advised to avoid unknown donation links, especially those shared on social media, and not to give money directly to individuals outside authorised channels.
Under the law, raising funds for unregistered entities — whether in person or online — is a criminal offence. Those who create or manage unlicensed donation websites face jail terms and fines between Dh200,000 and Dh500,000, or both.
