Abu Dhabi Police have issued nine safety guidelines for electric bicycle and scooter riders, urging them to wear protective gear, use designated cycling paths, follow speed limits, and ride responsibly to ensure the safety of all road users.
Abu Dhabi Police's 9 safety tips for e-bicycle and e-scooter riders:
- Wear protective gear: Always use a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads to reduce the risk of injury.
- Use designated bike lanes: Ride only on approved cycling tracks and avoid roads meant for motor vehicles.
- Follow speed limits: Stick to the permitted speed and avoid riding too fast.
- Do not carry passengers or heavy loads: Extra weight can affect balance and control.
- Avoid wearing earphones: Stay alert to traffic, pedestrians and surrounding hazards.
- Obey traffic rules: Follow traffic lights, road signs and give way when required.
- Stay focused: Do not use mobile phones or other distracting devices while riding.
- Inspect your vehicle before riding: Check the brakes, tyres and lights to ensure the bicycle or scooter is in good condition.
- Ride carefully in crowded areas: Slow down, give priority to pedestrians and avoid risky manoeuvres or stunts.
Under Executive Council Resolution No. (13) of 2022, riders who violate e-scooter regulations can face the following penalties:
- Riding without a valid permit: Dh200
- Carrying a passenger: Dh300
- Using roads with speed limits above 60km/h: Dh300
- Riding outside designated lanes: Dh200
- Parking in a way that blocks traffic or pedestrians: Dh200
